Course Overview:

As someone who governs a public utility, you carry a significant responsibility. The services your utility provides are critical in consumers' lives. Ensuring the operations are well managed and appropriate is a top priority. Just as important is how you approach monitoring, evaluating, and executing priorities.

During this class, you will gain a better understanding of your financial responsibilities as a utility board member while building financial acumen. For the first half of this session, you will focus on what is important when it comes to governance and why governance carries importance in the work of the utility. Our day will then transition to how to be most effective as a board.

Course Objectives:

The What and why

  • Examine and understand the audit, budget, financial plans, and debt.
  • Understand the board members' role in oversight.
  • Review plan adoption and how to monitor execution.
  • Use metrics to evaluate outcomes
  • Learn when adjustments and modifications are needed.

The How

  • Contemplate and practice responding to challenging situations and people.
  • Create a list of your most desired traits that factor into strong governance.
